Where We Buy Our Food
How to make conscious food choices that support vibrant health for ourselves and for the planet.
One of the most common questions we are asked is, “Where do you buy your food?”
Over the past few years, our food choices have shifted dramatically. What began as a quest to eat well and support our own bodies nutritionally has expanded to a more conscious desire to support better food systems around us. By seeking the answer to the question, “Where does our food come from?” we have naturally begun to purchase food directly from farmers, growers, and ranchers who have a passion for what they do, alongside a deep understanding of organic and/or regenerative farming. Our focus has shifted from “how can I help myself?” to “how can my food choices support the ecosystems around me?” When we make choices with this greater awareness, our diets have an impact that reach far beyond just ourselves.
Regenerative farming supports the ecosystem is many tangible ways, such as sequestering carbon emissions, enriching the soil, retaining water, and improving biodiversity. Purchasing from farms keeps money circulating within the local economy and supports small business. Plus, eating locally has nutritional benefits, as well:
In-season: Local food is grown is soils that are native to where you live in harmony with the local seasons - meaning your biology is actually designed to accept this food better than “foreign” or out-of-season foods. The molecules in the food are a product of the same environmental conditions (sunlight, circadian rhythm, season) that your body is currently experiencing.
More nutrients: When food is transported across the world in trucks, boats, planes, etc. food loses its freshness significantly during transit. When you consume food that was grown nearby, you are much more likely to receive more nutrients due to the shorter “food miles” that food has traveled.
Better gut diversity: Food grown in healthy soils is more likely to contain beneficial microbes that support a balanced, resilient gut microbiome which supports overall health and wellbeing.
Non-toxic: Food grown without chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or other chemical inputs has been proven to produce better health outcomes than conventional food grown under these toxic conditions.
Everyone in the world eats - yet (to no fault of our own) the majority of us are quite ignorant to where our food actually comes from! If you are someone who is seeking better options, this article will point you in the right direction.
Personally, we have found that buying food with integrity truly introduces more vitality into our everyday lives and aligns best with what we deem valuable and meaningful in embodying a fully nourished life.
Each of the companies listed below holds integrity and serves a greater mission of providing ethical, local, and/or sustainable food options for people who care about what they put into their bodies. There certainly are many great farms/resources that are not included in this list, but for the sake of simplicty we’ve only included places we know personally, have ordered from before, or have been recommended to us.
We hope this article inspires you to introduce more vitality into your life through the nourishing vehicle of good food!
